Upper School Chemistry Teacher

The Geneva School is a mission-driven school established in 1993. Our mission is to provide students in

As a mission-driven school, faculty members play a central role in fulfilling our mission. Hired by and
subject to the supervision of the director of rhetoric school (grades 9-12), the Chemistry Teacher is an
exempt position. The teacher, in a formational and relational role, models Christ-like behavior within
The Geneva School community as he or she studies, re-imagines, and teaches within the Christian,
liberal arts tradition.

I. Essential Duties

The Geneva School chemistry teacher instructs tenth grade students in the properties and behavior of
matter. As a result, students gain a profound understanding of the world in which they live, both the
parts they can see and the parts they cannot see. The aim is to instill in students a sense of wonder and
awe for the created world.

Key responsibilities include:

• Lesson planning: Developing and structuring lessons based on the school’s curriculum.
• Classroom instruction: Presenting chemistry concepts through lectures, demonstrations, and
  hands on activities while bringing intelligence, energy and creativity to bear on the craft of
  teaching.
• Lab supervision: Preparing, guiding and supervising lab experiments; all while ensuring student
  safety.
• Assessment and feedback: Regularly assessing student understanding and progress through a
  variety of methods, including tests (assessments), quizzes, labs and registers, and homework.
  Providing constructive feedback in order to improve students understanding and mastery of
  key concepts in chemistry. Tracking student progress and identifying areas where students may
  need additional support.
• Classroom environment: Maintaining a safe, organized, and conducive learning environment.
  Skillfully managing a classroom of high school students with varying academic skills. Addressing
  student behavior issues in accordance with the school’s policies and practices.
• Communication: Posting grades and assignments in a timely manner and corresponding or
  conversing regularly with student’s parents regarding student progress or concerns.
• Collaboration: Collaborating with other teachers, administrators, and staff to improve the
  school’s educational program.

II. Personal Profile

Required skills and experience:

• Understanding of chemistry: Deep knowledge of key concepts in chemistry, including atomic
  structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, states of
  matter and their properties, thermochemistry, etc. as well as the proper use of lab equipment
  and lab safety protocols.
• Excellent communication skills: Ability to articulate complex ideas clearly, both verbally and in
  writing.
• Teaching experience: Proven ability to effectively deliver lessons and engage students in active
  learning.
• Classroom management: Establish a positive and supportive learning environment that
  encourages discussion, questions, and constructive feedback. Utilize effective classroom
  management strategies to maintain student focus and accountability.
• Professional development: Partner with colleagues to share best practices and enhance
  student success.
• Relevant education: Bachelor's degree in the discipline of chemistry from an accredited
  institution.
