Retreat Theme and Title

John Milton’s ‘Of Education’ (1644)

This seminal essay by the great Puritan Renaissance poet is often quoted by classical educators—‘to repair the ruins of our first parents’—but may not actually be as familiar to us as it should be. We will read and discuss this brief but important document and talk through its place in the modern renewal of classical education.
This is an academic retreat rather than a conference, as is the practice of the Alcuin Fellows. We gather around three things: fellowship, food & drink, and ideas, and share and enjoy all three joyfully, always striving to challenge one another to become better Classical Christian educators.
The will be a welcome dinner and reception on Thursday evening. Friday morning will feature a brief talk on Milton and education by Dr. Grant Horner, Professor of Renaissance and Reformation Studies at The Master’s University, Director of the Master’s University in Italy, National Alcuin Council member and head of the Alcuin Fellowship Western Region. Discussion sessions on Friday will delve into the text of Milton’s ‘Of Education’ and how it might better inform our understanding of classical education both during the Renaissance as well as in our present-day schools. Can we really reproduce Classical Christian education in the style of the Renaissance? And should we? Breakout discussion groups will be led by Alcuin West Fellows Andrew Selby and Shea Ramquist. Andrew and Shea both teach at Trinity; Andrew’s PhD is from Baylor, where he specialized in Early Christian Theology, and Shea is a doctoral candidate at Notre Dame specializing in the history of higher education.
Saturday will feature a day of study and discussion at The Getty Villa in Malibu, an exact reproduction of the Caesar family villa at Herculaneum in southern Italy. This spectacular complex has the largest collection of classical antiquities outside Europe!
