Collaborative Heads (Beginner)
cohort
About the cohort
This cohort is for new or aspiring heads or board members of collaborative schools. The collaborative (hybrid, university-model, etc.) terminology is shorthand for schools that are programmed as a mixture of homeschooling and private education. Whether you are thinking of starting a school like this or have just started one, this cohort is for you. The cohort will work through all the principles and strategies that are essential to building and sustaining a collaborative model school.
Meeting Dates and Time: Beginning Sept 16, third Friday of the month at 3pm CST
Meet Your Cohort Leader
Syllabus
We will get oriented to each other and work to identify the common elements of our value for the model. We will look at the words we use and why we use them. We will identify and clarify why we are choosing to do school this way. We will then identify the most common obstacles to the collaborative model and why facing these obstacles are worth it. This will result in a guiding document for the building or the re-fortification of your mission and vision.
We will focus on the skills that are necessary to head a collaborative model school. I will tell my story of building and heading a collaborative school for the last 13 years. We will consider cycles of growing a school, issues of burnout, and the pursuit of rhythms that will promote longevity.
We will work on building/refining core documents and knowing how to put these ideas to use in the life of the school. We will work on a one-page document that contains the core identity of your entire school on one sheet of paper.
We will work on how to build the core administrative systems of your school. We will also discuss the value of being a systems-minded business while still fostering a classical ethos to your school.
We will work on a plan for the evolving relationship between the board and head of school. We will assess the health of your current relationship and give you tools to make it stronger. We will also cover the role of the board and how to lead them from behind. Finally, we will learn what it means to be a strategic board and the art of a good board meeting.
We will focus on the strategies to market your school with a special emphasis on how to create a great monthly informational session for interested families. We will also cover the admissions process.
