Board Chairs Cohort

About the cohort

The Board Chair Cohort is for anyone serving as the Board Chair from new chairs to seasoned veterans. The goal of this cohort is to understand and implement the basics and to root out bad habits while establishing the good.  Over the course of six, 90 minute sessions, the cohort will cover: the key relationships between the Board Chair, the Head of School, and the three main standing Board Committees; research-based best practices for ensuring the long term stability and mission delivery of your school; and developing and accomplishing an effective strategic plan.  Participants in the cohort will also be invited to four equipping calls focused on implementing previously studied best practices at key times during the school year.  In March, the Board Cohort call will discuss finishing the year with the Head of School and completing his or her annual evaluation.  A May call will focus on possibilities for the annual board retreat.  The August call will explore how to translate the strategic plan and the Board’s summer retreat work into actionable annual agendas for the Head and the Board, and the September call will examine the realities of budgets, strategic objectives, and setting tuition.

Meeting Dates & Times: This cohort will be offered in both the fall and the spring, and will combine both groups for the four remaining equipping calls.  The fall cohort will meet for 6 consecutive Mondays, September 12 through October 17 from 1:00 to 2:30pm EST.  The spring cohort will be on Wednesday evenings: January 25 through March 1, from 7:00 to 8:30pm  EST.

Joining a cohort

In order to keep group sizes small, and maximize effectiveness, groups are limited in size (typically 10-12) and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants are asked to commit to the work and engagement involved.

Due to the limited size, some individuals will be waitlisted until there are enough applicants to form a new group. Also, a minimum of six participants are needed for each group to make.
