Paideia Classical Christian School, located in beautiful Tampa, Florida, is seeking to hire a Dean of Academics for the 2024-25 school year. Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years teaching experience in a classical Christian school and possess a broad knowledge of educational administration, curriculum, and instruction.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Dean of Academics will oversee every facet of the school’s operation that directly impacts student learning. This includes providing the resources, guidance, and programming necessary to support each student during their time at Paideia and eventually, their next educational pursuit. The Dean of Academics will work alongside the Head of School to monitor classroom instruction, help maintain a positive, structured, and Christ-centered school culture, and oversee curriculum development for all subject areas, grades K-12.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Head of School, the responsibilities for the Dean of Academics include, but are not limited to the following:

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

  • Develop and review curriculum documents.
  • Establish and guide an annual review rotation for major subject areas.
  • Oversee the selection of published teaching materials for classroom use.
  • Supervise the annual administration of standardized testing (CLT, SAT, PSAT, ERB, AP).
  • Ensure curriculum and pedagogy alignment with accreditation standards as described by the Association of Classical and Christian Schools (ACCS).

INSTRUCTIONAL SUPERVISION

  • Spearhead the construction of the master schedule of classes annually.
  • Observe and interact with teachers on effective teaching methods and techniques.
  • Help mentor, train, and assist all teachers and support staff in the day-to-day practical application of classical Christian education at Paideia
  • Collaborate with the Head of School to organize and implement a comprehensive professional development plan for teachers, including staff orientation, summer training conferences, and weekly faculty Lyceum, etc.
  • Recruit, screen, and supervise substitute teachers.
  • Ensure adequate coverage of curricular objectives and student learning by comparing weekly lesson plans with annual teaching plans and performance objectives.
  • Assist in developing a mentoring/peer coaching program for teachers.
  • Work with teachers and parents to address individual student academic concerns and learning obstacles, maintaining a log of students whose academic performance is below a “C” or the equivalent. Assess for academic probation.
  • Attend and assist with parent/teacher conferences as requested or deemed necessary. Keep a record of all conferences and inform the Head of School when appropriate

ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP

  • Oversee the management of all student academic records
  • Supervise curricular components of maintaining ACCS accreditation.
  • Develop and update Curriculum Guides, Lead Sheets, and School Profile.
  • Establish and maintain substitute teacher list; Arrange for substitute teachers as needed during the school year.
  • Contribute to the school community by maintaining a positive attitude, fulfilling all required duties, and attending required events throughout the year, including professional development and faculty meetings.
  • Promote the mission of Paideia individually and institutionally, support and implement the philosophy of a classical Christian education, and participate in building faith in the community.
  • Set up and maintain all RenWeb schedules and classes, including gradebook, progress reports and report cards. Provide instruction to teachers and parents in the use of RenWeb for all curricular and academic purposes.
  • Counsel students on their high school academic choices, course planning, and work with parents and students to address academic issues as they arise.
  • Assist students and families through the college application process.
  • Educate students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, standardized testing, and essays.
  • Help to create opportunities for students to interact with colleges which may include college visits to Paideia, college fairs, and by providing information regarding other opportunities for students including advice on visiting colleges.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED PERSONAL QUALITIES

The Dean of Academics will:

  • Have received Jesus Christ as his/her personal Savior and believe that the Bible is God’s Word and standard for faith and daily living.
  • Be in whole-hearted agreement with Paideia’s Statement of Faith, Mission, and Vision
  • Be a Christian role model in attitude, speech, and action toward others (Luke 6:40). This includes being committed to God’s biblical standards for sexual conduct.
  • Be a Christian who is, and will remain during the period of employment, an active member of a Christ-centered church, growing in his/her Christian relationship with God, and actively practicing and exhibiting Christian principles of the Christian faith.
  • Be spiritually mature and consistently maintain a daily devotional and prayer life.
  • Recognize the role of parents as primarily responsible before God for their children’s education and be prepared to assist them in that task.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The Dean of Academics will possess the following:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to present information effectively to an audience.
  • Proven ability to cultivate productive, professional relationships.
  • A robust understanding of the classical Christian education model.
  • Ability to analyze and draw conclusions from data.
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills.
  • Proficient in the use of RenWeb, Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Google Calendar and email with the ability to quickly learn new technologies.
