Dean of College and Academic Advising - Job Summary
The director of college and academic advising will lead the college advising program and all its components to support students toward the best secondary educational match. This position will also support academic success and academic planning for grades 11 and 12.
Dean of College and Academic Advising - Primary Responsibilities
- Lead all aspects of the college advising program including assisting students and parents in post-secondary educational choices.
- Coordinate and implement a predictable academic support program for students in grade 11 and 12: monitor student success, design and manage plans for students who need additional support, and advise students on both course progression and graduation requirements.
- Plan and implement programming for study skills, academic help sessions and student advising in collaboration with the grades 9 and 10 academic advisor and the division head.
- Coordinate and lead grades 11 and 12 grade level planning to ensure a predictable and supportive academic experience for students
Dean of College and Academic Advising - Additional Responsibilities
- Provide highly personalized guidance to students and families through academic and collegiate planning including individual conferences with all 11th and 12th grade families and effective group meetings and presentations for parents and students at critical junctures in the college counseling process.
- Assist students through all aspects of the application process, counseling students on test options and registration, and educating them about scholarships and financial aid, how to conduct college visits and any additional topics that make students more competitive applicants.
- Stay current (and communicate as needed) on admissions trends that include changes in the SAT Subject Test requirements, competitive applications with the Common App and the Coalition App, SAT and ACT testing irregularities so Bear Creek students can remain competitive applicants.
- Work with marketing and communications annually to update the Bear Creek School Profile so that the display and data positively reflects our student body. Stay aware of competitive school profiles to ensure that Bear Creek is providing competitive data in an easy-to-read format.
- Manage and administer the Academic and College Advising budget.
- Schedule visits and host college representatives to The Bear Creek School.
- Maintain updated and helpful resources that cover the academic, college and career needs of students in grades 7-12.
- Instruct faculty annually on writing effective letters of recommendation, provide resources to support quality letters, oversee the student-request process (as suggested by teachers to help them monitor number of letters they write) and support the submission of each of these letters.
- Represent the perspective of college advising and academic advising in Upper School meetings including US leadership, grade level planning, Academic Senate, Academic Team, Student Concerns and House.
- Collaborate with Athletic Director to provide detailed information to prospective college athletes about college recruiting and the NCAA process.
- Prepare documentation for college and scholarship programs and including the Secondary School Report, School Profile, letters of recommendation for all seniors and NMSC documentation.
- Analyze trends and data in SAT, ACT and AP scores as it applies to admissions statistics, student performance and outcomes tracking.
- Facilitate strong connections with college representatives and promote Bear Creek distinctives at the university level.
- Actively network and participate in regional and national conferences and message boards, including NACAC, PNACAC, NAIS, etc.
- Facilitate ongoing connections with a broad range of college types
- Utilize current best practices and stay current on resources and trends in higher education.
- Establish and support concurrent credit opportunities.
Dean of College and Academic Advising - Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; Masters preferred
- Experience in college advising at the high school or college admissions level
- Broad understanding of the current higher educational landscape, admission requirements, admission options, and application procedures employed by colleges and universities
- Excellent writing skills, particularly in the area of student letters of recommendation
- Excellent interpersonal, public speaking and advising skills

Dean of College and Academic Advising - Physical Requirements
- Primarily office work (computer, paperwork, telephone, communicating with the public). May require standing for long periods of time while assisting at events.
