Dean of Logic and Rhetoric Schools Job Description

Student Community

  • Share mission of the school with students
  • Enforce and revise the regulations, goals, and codes in The Standard
  • Oversee student discipline
    • Organize Honor Council and appoint members; convene Honor Council meetings as needed and communicate results to administration;
    • Write behavior management plans as needed
  • Monitor homework load
  • Monitor balance of academic-based and event-based calendaring issues
  • Oversee aftercare staff and students
  • Plan the Honors Assembly each spring
  • Coordinate three Pig Fests and two Coffee Houses (or replacement event) in conjunction with Assistant Deans

Teacher Community

  • Assist in hiring and interview process of faculty
  • Organize faculty meeting and training as needed
  • Organize and communicate exam schedules to teachers
  • Appoint grade team leaders to facilitate bi-weekly lunch meetings to keep abreast of struggling students and preview the coming week’s events and deadlines; read minutes of meetings and/or attend when able
  • Schedule department meetings monthly; provide department heads with agenda points for meetings
  • Monitor test calendar and hold teachers accountable for posting regularly and accurately
  • Help prep teachers for parent-teacher conferences; sit in on as many conferences as possible; ensure that conferences are documented and recorded on Renweb
  • Work with teachers regarding pedagogy, instructional models and strategies that cohere to the vision of LOCS
  • Observe Logic and Rhetoric classrooms, conduct teacher evaluations with written and oral feedback
  • Manage “grade norming” and grading policy with department heads
  • Alert teachers to professional development opportunities
  • Provide accountability and oversight on student transcripts
  • Oversee lesson plans with department heads
  • Revise faculty handbook annually
  • Develop specific teacher development plan required for faculty over a multi-year period
  • Evaluate faculty and provide guidance and feedback on professional development
  • Supervise standardized testing at upper levels in conjunction with College Counselor and Assistant Dean of Academic Life
  • Determine AP and weighted courses in conjunction with the curriculum committee
  • Ensure consistency and quality of exams alongside department heads


Parent Community

  • Transmit mission of LOCS
  • Plan and facilitate parent education night and LI/New to L/R Orientation
  • Communicate with parents re: behavior management plans as needed; solicit input; partner with parents in goal setting and enforcement for students
  • Participate in parent admission interviews with Head of School
  • Communicate with parents about student concerns relating to discipline, behavior and/or academics’
  • Forge relationships and communicate with new parents to ensure student success and full integration into the school community
  • Work closely with minority parents to ensure student success and full integration into the school community
  • Work with school counselor to support students w/ADD, dyslexia, etc.
