The Covenant School, an independent Christian Liberal Arts and Sciences school for pre-kindergarten through grade 12 located in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking to fill a full-time position for a Director of College Advising.
Job Summary – The Director of College Advising is responsible for planning and implementing the Upper School’s comprehensive college advising program with the goal of supporting students and their families through the college admission process. With informal and formal meetings, evening programs, and a structured weekly college guidance course, the Director of College Advising partners with students as they search for and apply to colleges and accept college offers. The Director of College Advising reports to the Director of Academic Resources.
Successful applicants will have: A mature and thoughtful commitment to Christ;
Thorough understanding of professional ethics and confidentiality;
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university, Master's degree preferred;
Prior experience in college admissions and/or college advising;
Previous experience in social-emotional counseling is a plus;
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
Strong writing and editing skills;
Excellent organizational skills and time management;
Strong information technology skills and an aptitude for problem-solving;
Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and efficiently;
A track record of follow-through and of consistently meeting deadlines;
Attention to details and accuracy; and
Experience with office-based computer software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Drive/Mail/Scheduling (Experience with Blackbaud and Naviance is a plus).

Primary Job Responsibilities:
Meet with students and parents regularly to advise and guide through the college admission process;
Organize and process the School’s component of student college applications;
Write professional and personal narrative assessments for each student in the senior class; Plan and execute student and parent programs on the college admission and financial aid processes;
Create and implement an engaging and effective college guidance course;
Build professional working relationships with college deans of admission and their staff;
Stay abreast of trends and changes in college admissions;
Create and maintain informational documents related to college advising;
Train school staff in writing letters of recommendation; and
Provide support to students with academic and social-emotional needs, when necessary.
