Title: Special Education Director

Report To: Superintendent

Duty Days: 10 Months

Wages/Hours Status: Exempt



  • Special Education Certification K-12
  • Teaching Certificate with Special Education endorsement
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Administrative certificate preferred
  • Diagnostician, LSSP, or Counseling preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years in Special Education preferred
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.


Job Goals:

To provide an educational atmosphere in which students will move toward their full academic potential in accordance with Aristoi Classical Academy philosophy of classical education.  To maintain primary responsibility for the evaluation process and appraisal staff, serving as supervisor/evaluator (in collaboration with Headmaster) for appraisal personnel.  Consult with teachers, Headmaster, and staff regarding referrals, implementation of appraisals for eligibility, resource materials, and evaluation procedures/instruments utilized in the area of special education.


Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Ability to develop and implement an Individual Education Plan (IEP)
  • Knowledge of child development and characteristics of students with disabilities Knowledge of the prescribed curriculum  
  • Knowledge of current educational research relating to the instruction of students with disabilities  
  • Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology  
  • Knowledge of learning styles and skills in using varied teaching methods to address student learning styles 
  • Skill in oral and written communication with students, parents, and faculty/staff.  
  • Ability to assess levels of student achievement effectively, analyze test results and prescribe actions for improvement 
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements associated with Special Education
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations and interpersonal skills
  • Prior supervisory experience



Special Education faculty and staff


Performance Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as a mediator between students and faculty, among staff, and between faculty and parents to assure an effective education for students and a more positive working climate
  • Coordinate meetings among faculty groups for the purpose of planning and evaluating student progress
  • Provide individualized education plans to meet the needs of all students and ensure compliance with all state, federal, and local requirements
  • Assists in providing staff development for special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators
  • Reviews IEP for enrolling Special Education students to determine appropriate placement
  • Monitors assessment process for appropriate modifications and/or accommodations
  • Coordinates special education budget with administrators
  • Serve as Case Manager for students who receive special education services, i.e. ARD facilitator, PEIMS report, special education grants
  • Attends “All Staff” meetings the 1st Wednesday of each month
  • Attends monthly administrative Meetings with Superintendent/ Headmaster
  • Coordinates weekly Special Education staff meetings
  • Performs other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of the position
  • Perform other duties as assigned
