Atlanta Classical Academy is seeking a humanities faculty member to teach various classes in the upper school. The primary teaching responsibility will be for the four-semester 9th and 10th grade Western civilization course sequence. These are required courses. Ability to teach a range of electives such as moral or political philosophy is also preferable. The candidate should have a strong background in history, preferably holding an advanced degree (a bachelor’s degree in history, classics, political science or a closely-related field is required; bachelors of education with a concentration in social science are not preferred). Candidates would ideally have experience teaching in a classical school and have demonstrable experience with readings-based classes incorporating the Socratic method to the greatest possible extent.

Atlanta Classical Academy is a K-12 classical charter school that opened K-8 in the 2014 academic year. Daily study in Latin is required from the sixth to eighth grade, and another year of Latin is mandatory in the high school. Great books and Socratic discussion commence in the upper elementary school. The upper-school curriculum centers on the reading and discussion of great books in literature, primary sources in history, and on a thorough understanding of both the facts and the concepts in mathematics and the sciences. The study of art and music is required K-8, and art and music electives are offered as well. To graduate, all seniors must write a senior thesis and deliver and defend it orally in front of fellow students, members of the faculty, and the principal. Teachers are hired based upon their mastery of academic disciplines and their capacity for conveying knowledge to young people. Atlanta Classical Academy is affiliated with the Barney Charter School Initiative at Hillsdale College.

Applicants should send their CV, copies of transcripts (unofficial acceptable initially), a roughly 600-word philosophy of education statement, and contact information for two professional references. Where available, writing samples of no more than twenty pages in length are welcomed. Concise responses (two pages, 600 words) to the school’s mission statement would also aid evaluation but are not formally required; the school mission statement is available online at https://atlantaclassical.org/about/mission/.Teaching candidates must both understand and support the mission and philosophy of classical education and of Atlanta Classical Academy.

Questions and application submissions should be addressed to Mr. Josh Andrew (jandrew@atlantaclassical.org); review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
