Position Summary
The Reading Specialist provides support to struggling students in the area of reading. The reading specialist will use both "push-in" and "pull-out" methods of remediation to support students needing reading intervention. The reading specialist will also use all data sources to provide targeted strategies to improve literacy skills of identified students. The reading specialist will use Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) data and other reading diagnostic tools to determine a student's oral reading, phonological awareness skills, spelling and morphology, recognition of alphabet letters and sounds and concept of words. The reading specialist will work collaboratively with the Head of Lower School, the Director of Academic Support, and K-2 classroom teachers to assess students' needs, plan for remediation, model lessons, and lead professional development. The reading specialist will serve as a resource to parents by communicating assessment results and implications regarding a child's reading trajectory. The reading specialist will also assist the Head of Lower School in the development and refinement of the JK-6 language arts program. The position requires an experienced educator who is a mature Christian, energetic, organized, and flexible, and who will provide leadership, communication, and administrative skills for a growing Academic Support Program. The Reading Specialist reports to the Head of Lower School.
Essential Functions
- Plan, implement, and evaluate programs of instruction for small groups of students, attending to special learning needs and the paradigm of Christian classical education
- Collaborate effectively with other faculty
- Shepherd students' hearts and minds by providing biblical and gospel-filled instruction, correction and encouragement
- Maintain a welcoming and orderly classroom environment
- Monitor and evaluate students' progress, and communicate that progress with parents through written report cards or progress reports and through conversations, as needed
- Participate in faculty meetings and in the overall life and community of the school
Qualifications
Knowledge
- Understanding of school's culture, policies and procedures
- Robust knowledge of pedagogy
- Best practices in early reading

- Administration: able to coordinate student schedules; basic computer skills

Education:
Minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college and endorsement as a reading specialist
