History, Memory, and Authority: How to Cultivate Holy Authority in the Classroom
Our time together will involve a deep-dive conversation (rather than passive lecture or tips & tricks). More than 50% of our time together will be discussion-based. Anyone interested in the history and philosophy of education will enjoy this discussion. We will talk about the readings, explore ideas, and discuss how it all integrates with the philosophy of classical Christian education.

The Art of Phronesis: Deliberative Imagination w/ Eric Cook
In Book VI of the Ethics, Aristotle says, “Virtue makes us aim at the right mark, and practical wisdom makes us take the right means.” How do we do “take the right means”? Drawing from the work of John Shotter, Eric will compare modern rationalist models of deliberation with what Shotter calls the “deliberative imagination” model. Deliberative imagination resists the idea of reductionistic problem-solving and incorporates a broad and nuanced web of delicately balanced variables to make prudent decisions.

Prudence and the Necessity of Self Knowledge w/ Eric Cook
The liberal arts tradition portrays Prudence as a woman holding a mirror. To be prudent leaders, we must know ourselves and be humble enough to come to terms with our own limitations. We are often our most substantial obstacle to prudence. Our ability to make sound, prudent decisions is fraught with sin, pride, and a myriad of other influences, many of which we are blind to. Without falling into the traps of self-authentication, self-justification, or unabashed self-interest, we must know that who we are is how we lead.
