About the workshop
Purpose
This workshop is designed for grammar school teachers who are new to teaching or experienced teachers who are looking for guidance in best practices in the classroom. Each discussion will provide strategies that are ready for implementation over the course of the year. The course will also feature wisdom and insight from a variety of veteran teachers who can provide insight into what they wish they would have known when they started.
Structure
As a six-session intensive, this workshop will meet weekly beginning the first week of February, 2022. Virtual meetings 60-90 minutes that work within the busy framework of full-time teaching calendar and demands; including an introduction to the key topic, discussion on best practices related to the topic, and small group breakouts.

Syllabus overview
Classroom Culture
We will be addressing successful tools for a nurturing and peaceful classroom. Specific topics will be developing routines, establishing calm in the classroom, the importance of greeting, making every minute meaningful, and communicating clear expectations.
Curriculum & The Calendar
In this module, we will discuss a high level view of the year and strategies for covering curriculum that meets administrative expectations and provides a framework for the year. The focus here will be looking at the second half of the year and addressing if teachers are going too quickly or not getting through enough.
Professionalism in an Academic Setting
We will be discussing professional conduct and appearance, including interactions with parents, the importance of punctuality, boundaries with students, social media, interacting with other school constituents such as donors and prospective parents, and working in a dynamic environment of a young institution.
Understanding Developmental Stages of Children
This module will be focused on better understanding of realistic and age-appropriate expectations of students. The reading material will specifically address language processing speed, developmental milestones, behavioral expectations, and personal responsibility. Emphasis will be on how this information can assist in knowing how to create high expectations within reason.
Projects & Assessments with Purpose

SCL Cohorts
Cohorts are year-long or multi-year mentorship learning groups led by veteran school leaders with expertise in their field. Groups are limited to 8-10 members - the ideal size to form genuine connections. Access the vital support you need to serve your school with excellence.
Events
Events grant us the opportunity to gather. As incarnational beings, nothing is better than being together. So having the chance to gather with like-minded classical Christian educators is a rich opportunity. That’s why so many of us return to SCL events year after year. Make SCL events part of the rhythm of your year. Click to learn more about our Summer Conference in June, Arete & Alcuin Fall Retreat in October, and Winter Symposium for Heads & Boards in February.
