The Covenant School, an independent Christian Liberal Arts and Sciences school for pre-kindergarten through grade 12 located in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking to fill a full-time, 10-month position for a School Counselor.

Job Summary - The Birdwood Campus School Counselor works with the Director of Student Support to plan and implement social-emotional support initiatives. The counselor provides social-emotional support (one-on-one and small group settings) to students in grades Pre-K through 5; plans and implements regular classroom social-emotional lessons; collaborates with faculty, staff, and parents to address student social-emotional concerns; conducts and/or organizes parent education related to social-emotional health; and provides training to faculty and staff to better support students in and out of the classroom. In addition, the counselor works with the director in situations involving abuse, self-harm, and suicide reports/concerns.

Successful applicants will have:

  • A mature and thoughtful commitment to Christ;
  • Thorough understanding of professional ethics and confidentiality;
  • Master's degree in counseling or a related field (social work, marriage and family therapy, etc.) from an accredited college/university;
  • Prior experience in school counseling or private counseling with adolescents;
  • Evidence of continuing education related to current, research-based counseling techniques;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills;
  • Strong information technology skills and an aptitude for problem-solving;
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and efficiently;
  • A track record of follow-through and of consistently meeting deadlines;
  • Attention to detail and accuracy; and
  • Experience with office-based computer software including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Drive/Mail/Scheduling (Experience with Blackbaud is a plus).

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Implement a community-wide approach to providing social-emotional support;
  • Deliver regular classroom-based lessons covering social-emotional topics that are age-appropriate;
  • Provide social-emotional support in one-on-one and small group settings;
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and parents to address individual student social-emotional needs;
  • Conduct parent education related to social-emotional health;
  • Provide training to faculty and staff to better support students in and out of the classroom; and
  • Work closely with the Director of Student Support in situations involving abuse, self-harm, and suicide reports/concerns.
