Open Positions

The Society for Classical Learning (SCL) is a leader in the classical, Christian school movement, committed to equipping educators and school leaders to grow, connect, and thrive every step of the way. We are joyfully bound to Christ as the central calling and purpose of our work. We are dedicated to boldly expanding the great work of the classical Christian tradition. And we are faithful to serve the broader movement by showing grace, love, and hospitality.

Though SCL has existed since the mid-1990s, current growth and opportunity within the CCE movement has brought about rapid growth and development for SCL, with many new initiatives ahead. As a non-profit, digital organization, SCL staff all work remotely, wear many hats, and require extraordinary leadership, personal initiative, and intrinsic motivation to do our jobs well. We’re a small, close-knit team with a lot of passion and love for the work we do. And although we are a fully remote team, we prioritize in-person gatherings throughout the year to connect, team-build, and have fun.

Chief Development Officer

At the Society for Classical Learning (SCL), we are on a mission to cultivate Christ-centered educational leaders who are shaping the future of classical Christian education (CCE) around the world. Rooted in the Nicene Creed and the historic Christian faith, SCL is a vibrant community of educators, thought leaders, and institutions committed to excellence in learning, leadership, and cultural engagement.

Now, we’re seeking a Chief Development Officer (CDO) to join our executive team and help lead us into our next chapter of growth, innovation, and impact.

The Chief Development Officer will serve as the strategic leader for all fundraising and development initiatives at SCL. This role is critical to sustaining and expanding our mission by securing funding through individual giving, foundations, grants, and corporate partnerships. You’ll work closely with our Executive Director and Board to build a strong, sustainable development program that fuels our national movement of classical Christian education.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy & Execution

  • Design and execute a comprehensive development strategy to grow SCL’s donor base and secure significant gifts.
  • Drive annual fundraising efforts to meet or exceed revenue goals, particularly through the SCL Growth Fund.
  • Lead the planning and execution of capital campaigns and donor initiatives.

Donor Cultivation & Stewardship

  • Build, nurture, and grow relationships with current and prospective donors, ensuring a high-touch, personalized approach.
  • Develop and implement donor engagement and appreciation initiatives that reflect the mission and values of SCL.
  • Provide transparent, compelling updates to donors about SCL’s mission impact and strategic goals.

Team Leadership & Organizational Collaboration

  • Lead and develop a high-performing development team across areas such as major gifts, planned giving, and corporate sponsorships.
  • Foster a results-driven, collaborative culture focused on mission and excellence.
  • Collaborate with program, communications, and finance teams to align development strategy with organizational goals.

Grant Writing & Partnership Development

  • Research and pursue grant opportunities aligned with SCL’s strategic priorities.
  • Oversee compelling grant proposals and ensure successful reporting to funders.
  • Cultivate relationships with foundations and strategic partners.

Board Engagement & Financial Oversight

  • Partner with the Board of Directors on fundraising strategy, donor outreach, and major gift cultivation.
  • Present regular fundraising performance updates and long-term development plans.

Manage development budgets with a focus on sustainability and impact.
