Hired by and subject to the supervision of the director of Rhetoric School (grades 9-12), the Black Box Theater Manager is a full-time, exempt position. The manager, in a formational and relational role, models Christ-like behavior within The Geneva School community as he or she works within the Christian, liberal arts tradition.

 Essential Duties

The Geneva School Theater Manager is responsible for the school’s Black Box Theater. This position manages the operations and technical aspects of the school’s theater, overseeing scheduling, daily operations, plays, events, and safety protocols. The manager works closely with the school’s upper school performing arts department as well as with lower school grade level teachers.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Theater Schedule Management:

Overseeing the daily operations of the theater. Managing bookings for the theater by organizing rehearsals and performances and distributing schedules.

  • Technical Oversight:

Ensuring the smooth running of technical aspects of performances or presentations, including sound and lighting systems and stage setups.

  • Problem Solving:

Helping the director and students with backstage issues that may arise during rehearsals or performances, ensuring the show runs smoothly despite unforeseen circumstances.

  • Safety & Compliance:

Ensuring safety protocols are adhered to within the theater space.

  • Collaboration:

Working closely with drama, music, and other departments that frequently use the theater.

  • Student Instruction and Management:

Teaching and managing high school students taking the school’s A/V elective.

  • Lift 20 lbs. occasionally and 10 lbs. frequently
  • Sit frequently and stand and walk on varied surfaces
  • Bend, stoop, crouch, push, pull, climb, balance, kneel, crawl
  • Use hands/arms to reach in any direction and seize, grasp, hold, and turn objects using hand(s). Use fingers, versus the whole hand, to pick, pinch, and feel objects.
  • See, talk, and hear to communicate with others in person, electronically, by phone, or by radio. Visual functions include the ability to identify and distinguish colors and bring an object into sharp focus.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational and time management skills are essential for managing bookings and schedules.
  • Understanding of theater production, including staging, sound, and lighting. Able to manage and program the school’s lighting and sound system.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are vital for coordinating with various staff and departments.
  • Knowledge of safety guidelines and the ability to work under pressure are important.
